Personally, I enjoy working on commissions for clients. Always exciting, and I love knowing that people like my work enough to pay for something custom done in my unique style. I've done numerous commissions over the years, both private & commercial, and I genuinely enjoy doing them every time. The extra fun is the special requests to add a personal item; a dog, a cat, a child's favourite toy, a specific drink, or even, as I was once asked, adding a child hiding around the side edge of the canvas, partially hidden from view. Knock wood, it's always gone well.

Flying Solo is a striking and imaginative work that blends surrealism with storytelling. The work has a dreamlike quality. The figures seem both connected and isolated, suggesting themes of solitude, flight, escapism, and searching for meaning. It has both emotional depth and still a touch of whimsy. I painted it in 2017. It's yet to find a home.

As the father of two boys, I remember all too well that feeling you get when they're taking risks and possibly putting themselves in harm's way. Trying to walk that fine line between caring for them whilst allowing them to experiment and falter is definitely an art.

Commuting, the trip between home and work, impacts modern life by affecting how cities grow and how people feel. Long commutes can cause stress, tiredness, make people unhappy with their jobs, and even harm their physical health. On the flipside, some people find their commute a chance to think or relax. I guess, with most things, it's all about how you look at it. 🚌🛳🚇

The feeling of "when no one's watching" can evoke a sense of freedom, vulnerability, and a chance to be authentic; we might feel more comfortable expressing our true selves, acting without the constraints of social expectations or the need to impress others. I tried to make the warped proportions of the figure vs the room magnify the feeling somehow.
